Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis took swift action on Tuesday following an uproar over objectionable content related to Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj on Wikipedia. Speaking to reporters in Mumbai, Fadnavis stated, "We strongly condemn the kind of statements written against Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj on Wikipedia. We have instructed our cyber department officials to take necessary action and communicate with the relevant authorities managing the platform to ensure that such misinformation is removed immediately."
The Maharashtra CM’s statement comes after a wave of anger on social media, triggered by the offensive content about the warrior king. The issue gained attention after the release of the film Chhava, based on the life of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, which led many people to visit the Wikipedia page to learn more about him. Upon doing so, they found controversial and objectionable content that spurred further outrage online.
Several social media users demanded that the offensive content be taken down, while others defended Wikipedia, claiming the information was historically accurate. Actor and film critic Kamran Akmal, in an X post, shared the controversial content, defending it with the statement, "This is history and it is true."
