In a major move toward reshaping urban transport and empowering local drivers, the Maharashtra government has announced the upcoming launch of its official ride aggregator app, to be operated by the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC). The app, named ‘Chhava Ride’, will serve as a public-sector alternative to private platforms like Ola and Uber.
Transport Minister and MSRTC Chairman Pratap Sarnaik, who chaired a key review meeting at Mantralaya, confirmed the development and said the proposal has reached its final phase. The app’s name was finalized after reviewing several options including 'Maha-Go', 'Jai Maharashtra', and 'Maha-Ride'. Final approval from Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar is awaited.
A Game-Changer for Public and Drivers
‘Chhava Ride’ aims to provide safe, reliable, and transparent transportation for passengers while ensuring better earnings and dignity for drivers, many of whom have long complained about high commission cuts and unfair treatment by private aggregators.
Minister Sarnaik emphasized that the app would prioritize employment for Marathi youth, and offer services such as taxis, auto-rickshaws, state buses, and electric vehicles under a single digital platform. “This app will free both passengers and drivers from the clutches of exploitative private aggregators,” he said.
He further stated that MSRTC’s existing infrastructure, manpower, and public trust give it a strategic advantage in operating a ride-hailing service. “This isn’t just about technology—this is about accountability, accessibility, and building an ecosystem that benefits the common man,” Sarnaik said.
Financial Boost for Drivers
In a significant announcement during the meeting, MLA Pravin Darekar revealed that unemployed Marathi youth joining the platform will receive support to purchase vehicles. Loans will be disbursed through Mumbai Bank at 10% interest. However, with an 11% interest subsidy planned through social welfare institutions such as Annasaheb Economic Development Corporation, VJNT Corporation, OBC Corporation, and MSDC, the effective interest rate for borrowers will be nearly zero.
Policy-Backed and Fully Regulated
The app is being developed in accordance with the Centre’s Aggregator Guidelines and Maharashtra’s state-level policy framework. The initiative is also being positioned as part of the government’s broader goal to formalize gig economy work, increase accountability, and ensure affordability for passengers.
With MSRTC already operating across thousands of routes and having a robust logistics and support network, the transition into urban ride-aggregation is expected to be both smooth and scalable.
