West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) Chief Mamata Banerjee today dedicated the party's student wing foundation day to the victim of the recent Kolkata rape and murder case. During her address at the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) event, Banerjee announced that her government would introduce stringent anti-rape laws, including capital punishment for rapists.
"We will pass a bill on anti-rape laws that will secure capital punishment for the rapist within seven days of the crime," Banerjee declared. This move comes in response to the brutal rape and murder of a 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9.
Taking aim at the BJP's call for a 12-hour "Bengal Bandh" in protest over the incident, Banerjee accused the saffron party of trying to defame the state rather than seeking justice. "They don't want justice; they are only trying to defame Bengal," she stated.
The Chief Minister urged all blocks to protest on August 31, demanding capital punishment for the accused, and called on women to take to the streets on September 1 to support this demand and advocate for legal changes.
In her speech, Banerjee also addressed the BJP's demand for her resignation, questioning whether the chief ministers of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Manipur had stepped down over crimes against women in their states. She further criticized the progress of the CBI investigation into the Kolkata rape-murder case, asking, "Where is justice?"
Banerjee emphasized that her government would soon call for an Assembly session to introduce the new anti-rape bill, reflecting her commitment to securing justice for the victim and deterring future crimes.
"The BJP doesn't want justice; they want delay. It has been 16 days since the case was handed over to the CBI. Where is justice?" she questioned, reiterating her resolve to see the case through swiftly and effectively.
