Mamata Banerjee Targets BJP Over Voter Row, Land Issues Before 2026 Polls

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee intensified her attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections, accusing the party of voter manipulation, land grabbing, and spreading divisive politics in the state.

Speaking to reporters, Banerjee alleged that attempts were made to grab land linked to Nobel laureate Amartya Sen, calling the move shameful and politically motivated. She further claimed that the BJP was following the same tactics once used by the CPI(M), including deleting voter names selectively. She stated that she has already approached the Supreme Court over the issue.

The Chief Minister also launched a broader political attack, saying the BJP had no role during India’s freedom struggle and is now misleading people while allegedly misusing public funds. Referring to recent tensions, she accused the party of promoting unrest during religious events like Ram Navami.

Her remarks come amid rising political tension in Kolkata, where clashes broke out between TMC and BJP workers outside the Chief Electoral Officer’s office over the bulk submission of Form 6 applications, which are used for adding new voters to the electoral roll.

Banerjee escalated the issue by writing to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, alleging that BJP-linked individuals were submitting thousands of fraudulent applications to include outsiders in West Bengal’s voter list. She described the alleged act as “voter hijacking” and demanded strict action, calling it illegal and unconstitutional.

Amid the controversy, Chief Electoral Officer Manoj Kumar Agarwal responded by stating that monitoring who submits applications is not part of his direct responsibility, adding that his primary duty is to conduct elections smoothly across the state.

With elections approaching, Banerjee asserted that defeating the BJP is crucial and hinted at a major political showdown, saying the upcoming polls will witness a decisive battle in West Bengal.
