Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday welcomed his Canadian counterpart Mark Carney at Hyderabad House in New Delhi for crucial bilateral discussions. The two leaders are holding delegation-level talks aimed at strengthening cooperation across multiple sectors.
This marks Prime Minister Carney’s first official visit to India since assuming office. His trip is being seen as an important step in advancing diplomatic and economic ties between the two countries.
Jaishankar Meets Canadian PM and FM
Earlier in the day, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met Prime Minister Carney and expressed appreciation for his commitment to building a forward-looking partnership. In a public message, Jaishankar described the interaction as productive and welcomed Canada’s renewed focus on engagement with India.
On Sunday evening, Jaishankar also held discussions with Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand, signalling active diplomatic engagement at multiple levels.
Focus on Trade, Energy and Innovation
According to official sources, the talks between the two Prime Ministers will review progress in key areas under the India-Canada Strategic Partnership. These include trade and investment, energy collaboration, critical minerals, agriculture, education, research, innovation, and people-to-people ties.
The leaders are also expected to exchange views on pressing regional and global developments, underlining the importance of coordination between New Delhi and Ottawa on international platforms.
Building on Earlier Global Meetings
The Delhi meeting builds upon earlier interactions between Modi and Carney on the sidelines of global summits last year. Officials believe the current visit provides an opportunity to translate those conversations into concrete policy outcomes.
