Prime Minister Narendra Modi began his Assam visit on April 1, 2026, from Dibrugarh district, where he visited the Monohari Tea Estate and interacted with tea garden workers ahead of the high-stakes Assembly elections. His visit comes just days before Assam heads to polls on April 9 to elect 126 members of the state assembly.

During his visit, Modi was seen plucking tea leaves alongside women workers dressed in traditional red-bordered sarees. He interacted closely with 19 workers, appreciating their dedication and contribution to making Assam tea globally recognised. He highlighted that the hard work of tea garden workers forms the backbone of the industry and plays a crucial role in strengthening India’s economy.

The Prime Minister also spent time listening to the daily challenges faced by workers and praised their resilience. He watched and enjoyed a traditional Jhumar dance performed at the tea estate, adding a cultural touch to his visit.

Sharing his experience on social media platform X, Modi described Assam’s tea culture as the “soul of Assam” and expressed pride in the efforts of tea garden families. He wrote that their perseverance has enhanced the pride of the state and showcased India’s rich heritage to the world.

The visit also carried political significance as Modi moved on to Mohanbari Airport to address election rallies in Gogamukh and Behali. With Assam gearing up for elections, the BJP is focusing heavily on development, welfare schemes, and support for key industries like tea production.

Modi’s interaction with tea workers also reflected his personal narrative, often highlighted in his speeches, about helping his father sell tea during his early years in Gujarat. This connection is frequently used to strengthen his outreach among grassroots communities.
