Murshidabad On Edge: Paramilitary Patrols Streets As Families Flee Violence Sparked By Waqf Act Protests

Tension gripped West Bengal's Murshidabad district on Sunday as paramilitary forces patrolled nearly deserted streets in the wake of violent protests that erupted over the Waqf Amendment Act. Scenes of panic and displacement played out across the region, with visuals emerging of terrified residents fleeing their homes by boat to cross into neighbouring Malda.

The unrest, which began after Friday prayers, has led to the deaths of at least three people. Clashes and arson continued into Saturday, prompting a stern response from authorities. The Calcutta High Court intervened, ordering the deployment of central paramilitary forces in sensitive zones, citing its inability to "turn a blind eye" to the widespread vandalism and lawlessness reported in multiple districts.

In an overnight crackdown, police arrested 12 more individuals, bringing the total number of arrests since the unrest began to 150. While some semblance of calm returned to the violence-hit areas of Suti, Dhulian, Samserganj, and Jangipur, the situation remains fragile.
