India and Malaysia on Sunday took a major step towards deepening their strategic partnership as Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim held extensive talks in Kuala Lumpur, unveiling new initiatives spanning defence and security, semiconductors, trade and emerging technologies.

Following the high-level meeting, Modi underlined the depth of bilateral ties, calling the relationship unique and rooted in history. “India and Malaysia share a special relationship. We are maritime neighbours. For centuries, our people have had deep and affectionate ties,” he said, reiterating New Delhi’s commitment to expanding cooperation across multiple sectors.

The Prime Minister used the occasion to deliver a firm message on terrorism, stressing India’s long-standing position on the issue. “Our message on terrorism is clear; no double standards, no compromise,” Modi said, signalling a shared resolve to confront security challenges without ambiguity.

Modi arrived in the Malaysian capital on Saturday to a ceremonial red-carpet welcome, with Prime Minister Ibrahim personally receiving him at the airport. Ahead of their formal talks, Modi was accorded a ceremonial reception at Perdana Putra, reflecting the significance both sides attach to the visit.

Highlighting people-to-people ties, Modi noted the strong Indian diaspora presence in Malaysia. “Today, Malaysia is the second largest country in the world with a population of Indian origin. Our civilisations, shared cultural heritage and democratic values bind us together,” he said.

On the security front, Modi said the two countries will intensify collaboration in sensitive areas. “We will strengthen cooperation in counter-terrorism, intelligence sharing, and maritime security,” he stated, adding that defence engagement would be expanded further. “We will also make defence cooperation more comprehensive,” he said.

The Prime Minister also pointed to future-oriented sectors as key pillars of the partnership. “Along with AI and digital technologies, we will advance partnerships in semiconductors, health, and food security,” Modi said, indicating a push towards innovation-driven growth.

Touching upon the broader regional picture, Modi emphasised the strategic importance of the Indo-Pacific. “The Indo-Pacific region is emerging as the growth engine of the world,” he said, adding that India remains committed to promoting development, peace and stability across the region in collaboration with ASEAN.

Echoing similar sentiments, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said the two nations continue to widen cooperation in trade, investment, connectivity and defence. He also highlighted India’s growing global economic footprint, noting that India has registered a spectacular rise in global trade and economic front, underscoring why closer engagement with New Delhi remains a priority for Kuala Lumpur.
