One Year As LoP: BJP Slams Rahul Gandhi’s Record, Calls It ‘Symbolic, Not Substantive’

As Congress MP Rahul Gandhi completes his first year as Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has launched a scathing critique of his performance, accusing him of symbolic leadership with minimal substance, and comparing his record unfavorably to past Opposition leaders.

Marking a rare milestone—given that the LoP post remained vacant for a decade due to the Congress's low seat share—Rahul Gandhi’s appointment last year was hailed as a revival of strong parliamentary opposition. However, BJP leaders argue that the opportunity has been squandered.

Frequent Absences, Limited Interventions

Senior BJP leaders alleged that Gandhi’s engagement in Parliament has been minimal. “A Leader of the Opposition must be the voice of the people inside the House. But Rahul Gandhi’s voice has often been missing—literally,” BJP MP Jagannath Sarkar said, pointing to Gandhi’s long absences and frequent foreign trips.

Echoing similar sentiments, BJP's Sudhanshu Trivedi took a swipe, claiming, “Congress leadership seems more committed to international schedules than national duties.”

LoP Then vs. Now: A Stark Contrast

BJP leaders were quick to draw comparisons between Rahul Gandhi’s tenure and past LoPs like L.K. Advani or Sushma Swaraj. “Leaders like Advani and Swaraj used the LoP post to challenge the government constructively, participate in debates, and influence legislative direction,” said BJP spokesperson Rohan Gupta. “What we are seeing now is just the title, not the temperament.”

They argue that the Congress party has become a “junior partner” in the broader Opposition alliance (INDI Bloc), citing declining influence and what they call “appeasement-driven politics.”

‘From Sharia to Strategy’: BJP Takes Ideological Aim

Beyond performance, BJP leaders questioned the ideological clarity of Congress under Gandhi’s leadership. “There’s confusion between defending the Constitution and promoting religious appeasement,” Gupta alleged, suggesting a widening ideological chasm between the NDA and the INDI Bloc.

They hinted that this will become more apparent in the upcoming Bihar Assembly polls, where the BJP hopes to test public sentiment on these issues.

Congress Pushes Back Quietly

While BJP went on the offensive, the Congress has so far responded with restraint, choosing to let Rahul Gandhi’s speeches in Parliament and public rallies speak for themselves. Gandhi has repeatedly accused the Modi government of undermining democratic institutions and centralizing power.

Notably, Gandhi’s elevation to LoP marked a historic turn after a 10-year vacuum in the role—caused by the Congress’s sub-10% seat share in 2014 and 2019. With 99 seats in the 2024 Lok Sabha, Congress barely crossed the threshold to claim the position.

Is One Year Enough for a Legacy?

Political observers say one year is not enough to draw final conclusions—but it is enough to set the tone. “It’s true that Rahul Gandhi hasn’t used the LoP post to its full potential so far,” a senior political analyst noted, “but the next four years will test if he can grow into the role or remain a placeholder in a fractured Opposition.”
