Parliamentary Panel Demands Action On Social Media Influencers Spreading Anti-National Content After Pahalgam Terror Attack

In the wake of the deadly Pahalgam terror attack, a parliamentary committee has demanded detailed reports from two key ministries regarding action against social media platforms and influencers allegedly spreading content harmful to national security. The Standing Committee on Communications and Information Technology, led by BJP MP Nishikant Dubey, expressed concern over the role of certain online platforms and individuals in promoting narratives detrimental to national unity.

The committee has sent letters to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, seeking comprehensive reports on actions to be taken under the Information Technology Act, 2000, and the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021. These ministries have been given a deadline to submit their responses by May 8.

A source familiar with the communication shared, “The panel is deeply concerned that social media influencers and platforms are actively spreading narratives that can compromise national security and unity.”

This move follows the tragic April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir, which claimed the lives of 26 people, including tourists. Indian authorities have blamed Pakistan-backed terror groups for the assault.

In the aftermath of the attack, several social media accounts have been banned or restricted for allegedly promoting inflammatory content in violation of national security guidelines.

The committee’s directive highlights the growing scrutiny of digital platforms in India, particularly regarding internal security concerns and the spread of misinformation. It underscores the government's commitment to ensuring accountability from platforms and influencers for content that undermines public order.
