He and his family have benefitted from the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana. I also met other beneficiaries of this scheme. Here are the highlights." Launched in February 2024, the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana aims to provide free electricity to one crore households willing to install rooftop solar panels. With a substantial budget of Rs 75,000 crore, the scheme's objective is to turn Indian families into "prosumers"?individuals who both produce and consume electricity. Out of the total allocation, Rs 65,700 crore is earmarked for direct benefit transfers (DBT) to households.
The initiative promotes renewable energy use among households, helping them generate clean electricity and reducing their reliance on conventional power sources. The Surya Ghar scheme not only focuses on sustainability but also aims to enhance energy security for millions of families across the country. By promoting self-sufficiency in energy production, the government is taking a significant step towards a greener and more sustainable future.
