Long queues of women, predominantly Muslims, have been seen outside post offices in Bengaluru due to a rumour that the Congress Party will transfer Rs 8500 monthly to women's accounts after June 4. This has led many women to open savings accounts through post offices.
8000 Women's Accounts Opened in 7 Days
According to data from the post office, around 8,000 women have opened Indian Post Payments Bank (IPPB) accounts in the last seven days. The General Post Office of Bengaluru has witnessed long lines of women waiting to open these accounts. Post office officials were surprised by the reason behind this sudden surge.
H M Manjesh, Chief Post Master of Bengaluru's General Post Office, explained that money from almost all Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) schemes is deposited into IPPB accounts. However, there is no information confirming that Rs 8500 will be deposited into these accounts as per the rumour. Despite this, for the past ten days, there has been an influx of women coming to open accounts. Typically, about 50 accounts are opened daily, but recently, about 800 women have been opening IPPB accounts every day, prompting the post office to set up special counters to handle the increase.
The rumour, which claims that the Congress has announced in its manifesto that Rs 8500 per month will be credited to these accounts if voted back to power, has caused significant activity in the post offices.
