In the wake of escalating violence in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district, senior BJP leader and former Union Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi launched a scathing attack on the Trinamool Congress (TMC)-led state government, accusing it of shielding those responsible for lawlessness and systemic disruption.
Addressing the media over the deteriorating law and order situation in Murshidabad, Naqvi alleged that the Mamata Banerjee government is “a hostage of those who orchestrate criminal conspiracies” and that it is “promoting and protecting such people instead of punishing them.”
The region has been rocked by widespread unrest since early April following protests against the Waqf (Amendment) Bill. Tensions have escalated over the past week, with reports of arson, stone pelting, and violent clashes surfacing from areas including Suti, Dhulian, Jangipur, and Samserganj. As of now, at least three people have lost their lives, and several others have been injured in the ongoing violence. More than 200 individuals have been arrested so far.
Criticising the ruling party's handling of the crisis, Naqvi said, “They (TMC government) don't want the 30%, but the other 70% of the population to escape... This is unacceptable for any state or country.” He claimed that the state administration appears to be siding with elements who are attempting to destabilize peace and order.
He further alleged that the TMC’s approach has emboldened disruptive forces. “They stand as the supporters of those looting the system, which will give the looters promotion and protection,” Naqvi said, blaming the government for undermining institutions and democratic accountability.
The BJP leader’s remarks come amid mounting pressure on the Mamata Banerjee administration to restore normalcy in Murshidabad and address public concerns. The violence has drawn attention at the national level, with opposition leaders demanding central intervention and a thorough investigation into the incidents.
