A tragic accident in south Mumbai on Saturday morning has claimed the life of a woman and left three others injured after a balcony of a four-storey residential building collapsed. The incident, which occurred amid heavy rainfall across Maharashtra, highlights the severe impact of the weather on the city's aging infrastructure.
The incident took place around 11 AM at Rubinnisa Manzil, an old building located on Sleater Road near Grant Road railway station. The building, managed by the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA), had been flagged as dangerous by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in the past. The structure?s precarious condition was exacerbated by the relentless rain, which contributed to the collapse of a balcony section, slab portions of the second and third floors, and part of the ground on the fourth floor.
According to officials, the collapse resulted in immediate casualties. "Four persons were injured when parts of the balcony gave way. They were quickly transported to a local hospital. Unfortunately, a woman estimated to be around 70 years old was declared dead on arrival. The other three are receiving medical treatment," a fire department officer reported.
The deceased woman's identity has yet to be confirmed. The collapse also left seven to eight people stranded inside the building, prompting an urgent response from the fire department. Rescue operations were underway, with emergency teams working diligently to reach those still trapped within the partially collapsed structure.
The heavy rains that pounded Mumbai and its suburbs on Saturday led to widespread waterlogging, though essential services like train and flight operations remained unaffected. The city's infrastructure struggles were starkly highlighted by the building collapse, underscoring the need for urgent attention to aging residential structures and the impact of extreme weather conditions.
