UN Security Council To Hold Emergency Meet Today On India-Pakistan Tensions After Pahalgam Terror Attack

Amid mounting tensions following the deadly terror attack in Pahalgam that claimed 26 lives—mostly tourists—the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is set to hold closed consultations on Monday to discuss the rapidly escalating situation between India and Pakistan.

The emergency meeting comes at Pakistan's behest, reportedly rattled by a series of punitive measures taken by India in the wake of the attack. According to a report by news agency PTI, Islamabad, a non-permanent member of the 15-nation UNSC, “requested closed consultations” on the issue. The Greek Presidency of the Council, which holds the rotating chair for May, scheduled the discussion for the afternoon of May 5.

India has taken a tough diplomatic stance following the Pahalgam tragedy. It has suspended the Indus Waters Treaty, cancelled all visas issued to Pakistani nationals, and banned all imports from the neighbouring country. The strong retaliatory steps have added further strain to already fraught relations between the nuclear-armed neighbours.

The UNSC comprises five permanent veto-wielding members—China, France, Russia, the UK, and the US—along with ten non-permanent members including Algeria, Denmark, Greece, Guyana, Pakistan, Panama, South Korea, Sierra Leone, Slovenia, and Somalia.

While details of the closed-door meeting are not expected to be made public, diplomatic observers say the discussions could signal a broader international concern over the growing instability in South Asia following one of the deadliest attacks in Kashmir in recent years.

The Pahalgam terror attack, which occurred over the weekend, has drawn sharp condemnation domestically and globally. With public anger surging in India, the government’s swift and sweeping actions against Pakistan are seen as both a warning and a show of zero tolerance for cross-border terrorism.
