In her Union Budget 2024 presentation on Tuesday, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced significant financial assistance for Bihar, including a substantial allocation of ?26,000 crore for various road projects in the state. This funding is set to be bolstered by aid from multilateral development agencies.
In her speech, Sitharaman emphasized that the central government is committed to enhancing infrastructure in Bihar, with plans to establish new airports, medical colleges, and sports facilities. She outlined a broader vision for the region, introducing "Plan Purvodaya," which aims to foster comprehensive development across Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Odisha, and Andhra Pradesh.
The Finance Minister also highlighted the government's intention to support industrial corridors in the eastern region, further promoting regional growth and connectivity. Additionally, Sitharaman announced that the government will provide e-vouchers directly to 1 lakh students annually, offering a 3% interest subvention on their loans to ease educational expenses.
This announcement follows the Centre's recent rejection of the JD(U)?s request for 'special category' status for Bihar, made during an all-party meeting on Monday. The current Indian Constitution does not accommodate new 'special category' states, which has been a point of contention.
Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Manoj Kumar Jha had previously called for both special status and a distinct financial package for Bihar, noting that the demand has persisted since the state?s bifurcation into Bihar and Jharkhand.
The comprehensive support outlined in the budget reflects the central government's strategic focus on bolstering infrastructure and economic development in the eastern states, aiming to drive growth and improve living standards across the region.
