The Lok Sabha today passed the Waqf Amendment Bill with 288 votes in favor, 232 against. The bill, which seeks to amend the Waqf Act of 1995, has sparked debate between the ruling and opposition parties.
Proponents argue that the amendments will bring greater transparency and efficiency in the management of Waqf properties, while opposition members claim it could lead to excessive government interference in religious endowments.
Union Minister for Minority Affairs stated that the bill aims to curb mismanagement and ensure better utilization of Waqf assets for community welfare. However, opposition leaders criticized the move, calling it an overreach into autonomous religious institutions.
The bill will now proceed to the Rajya Sabha for further discussion. If passed, it could significantly alter the administration of Waqf properties across the country.
