Amid intense discussions over the distribution of key portfolios in the Maharashtra cabinet, leaders of the Mahayuti alliance, including BJP?s Devendra Fadnavis, Shiv Sena?s Eknath Shinde, and NCP?s Ajit Pawar, are set to meet Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi on Thursday. The high-stakes meeting is expected to finalize the allocation of crucial ministries and settle the ongoing tussle over government formation.
Sources indicate that if Devendra Fadnavis retains his position as Chief Minister, Eknath Shinde may step into the role of Deputy Chief Minister. In such a scenario, Shinde is likely to demand influential portfolios such as Urban Development or Public Works Department (PWD). Additionally, he is vying for other critical ministries like Revenue, Agriculture, Health, Rural Development, and Industries for his party?s share in the cabinet.
Shinde?s faction is also expected to push for a significant presence at the central level, with speculation that Shrikant Shinde could be inducted into the Union Cabinet during its next expansion. This move would bolster Shiv Sena?s influence both at the state and national levels, ensuring control over ministerial allocations and funding for MLAs in Maharashtra.
Ajit Pawar, who leads the NCP faction supporting the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance, is reportedly keen on retaining the Finance Ministry along with his Deputy Chief Minister role. However, the BJP, which values the Finance portfolio for strategic reasons, is likely to resist this demand, setting the stage for intense bargaining during the Delhi meeting. Pawar?s camp is also eyeing major departments like Agriculture, Food Supply, Women and Child Welfare, and Medical Education.
With municipal elections in key cities such as Mumbai, Pune, Thane, and Aurangabad looming in early 2025, the allocation of portfolios is viewed as critical to maintaining control and influence in Maharashtra?s political landscape. The BJP, which holds significant sway within the alliance, is expected to play a decisive role in balancing demands from both Shinde and Pawar factions.
As the meeting unfolds in Delhi, clarity on the final division of portfolios and cabinet roles is expected by late tonight. This decision will shape the future of the Mahayuti government and its preparations for upcoming electoral battles in the state.
