A fresh political controversy has emerged after Punjab Police registered a case against Delhi minister Kapil Mishra for allegedly circulating a manipulated video of senior Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Atishi. The FIR was lodged in Jalandhar following a complaint by a local resident, who accused Mishra of spreading misleading content that could hurt religious sentiments.
According to officials, a technical examination of the video in question found signs of editing and manipulation. The clip, which was shared on social media, was used to claim that Atishi had made disrespectful remarks about Sikh Gurus. Investigators have reportedly concluded that the video did not accurately reflect the original speech and was altered to convey a different meaning.
Despite the police action, Kapil Mishra has rejected the allegations and said he will not be intimidated by the FIR. In a series of social media posts, he accused the AAP leadership of attempting to suppress the truth and claimed that the police case was meant to protect Atishi, who currently serves as the Leader of Opposition in the Delhi Assembly. Mishra further alleged that Atishi has avoided attending Assembly proceedings since the controversy began, even after repeated notices from the Speaker.
The issue has also sparked street-level political action in Delhi. The Bharatiya Janata Party organised a protest outside the AAP headquarters, demanding strict action against Atishi. Several senior BJP leaders participated in the demonstration and called for the cancellation of her Assembly membership, accusing her of making offensive remarks.
Atishi, who represents the Kalkaji constituency, has firmly denied all accusations. She has stated that she holds deep respect for Sikh Gurus and would never make statements that insult any religious community. Clarifying her position, she explained that the original video clip was taken out of context and later altered with misleading captions. According to her, the speech was related to a separate legislative discussion, and references to Sikh history were falsely added to distort her remarks.
