In a scathing critique of law and order in BJP-ruled states, Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, condemned the recent violent attack on two Indian Army officers and the gangrape of their female friend in Madhya Pradesh’s Indore district.

On Thursday, Gandhi described the incident as a disgrace to society and a stark indication of the failing law and order under the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) administration. The attack occurred on Wednesday night when the officers, who were on a picnic with two female friends, were assaulted by a group of unidentified men. According to reports, one of the female friends was raped during the assault.

Gandhi took to X (formerly Twitter) to express his outrage, stating, “The violence against two army soldiers and the rape of their female companion in Madhya Pradesh is enough to shame the entire society. Law and order in BJP-ruled states is almost non-existent – and, the negative attitude of BJP Government towards the day-by-day increasing crimes against women is extremely worrying.”

He further criticized the administration’s failure to provide safety and security, noting, “This audacity of the criminals is a result of the total failure of the administration and the unsafe environment prevailing in the country due to this is a restriction on the freedom and aspirations of the daughters of India.”

According to Badgonda police station in-charge Lokendra Singh Hirore, the officers, aged 23 and 24, who were undergoing a Young Officers (YO) course at the Infantry School in Mhow cantonment town, had gone on a picnic with their friends. The attack occurred around 2 a.m. on Wednesday when six to seven assailants arrived at the picnic spot on the Mhow-Mandleshwar road and began assaulting the officers and their friends.

Gandhi urged both society and the government to reflect on their responsibilities, stating, “Both the society and the government should be ashamed and think seriously – how long will they turn a blind eye to the responsibility of protecting half the population of the country!”

This incident has raised serious concerns about the effectiveness of law enforcement in BJP-ruled states and has ignited a broader debate on the safety of women and the state of law and order across India. The government’s response will be closely watched as the country seeks answers and accountability for this brutal attack.
