Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has assured that the Indian government is on high alert following China’s announcement of plans to construct the world’s largest dam on the Brahmaputra river in Tibet, near the Indian border. The proposed mega-dam has raised concerns in India about its potential impact on downstream states.

Speaking at an event in Agra, Singh stated, “The Indian government is on alert.” He emphasized that necessary measures will be taken to protect India’s interests, while urging Beijing to ensure that downstream regions remain unaffected by upstream activities.

India’s Vigilance Over the Brahmaputra

New Delhi has expressed its concerns over the project, emphasizing the need to safeguard the interests of states dependent on the Brahmaputra’s water flow. India has vowed to continue monitoring developments and take steps to prevent any adverse impact on its water security.

Global Standing and Progress

During his address at the 57th state-level meeting of the Uttar Pradesh Madhyamik Shikshak Sangh at Mufeed-e-Aam Inter College, Singh reflected on India’s growing influence on the global stage.

“Earlier, people did not take India seriously at international forums. But now, when India speaks, the world listens,” Singh said. He highlighted India’s economic progress, noting that the country’s economy has risen from the 11th position globally to the fifth and is poised to be among the top three in the next two and a half years.

Advancements in Defence and Education

Singh also emphasized India’s strides toward self-reliance in the defence sector, citing the use of new technologies and innovations. Addressing teachers at the event, he encouraged them to play a crucial role in shaping the nation’s future by guiding students.

Recalling the Anti-Copying Act passed in Uttar Pradesh during his tenure as the state’s education minister, Singh said he had faced significant political backlash for the law but remained steadfast, prioritizing the welfare of students over political gains.

China’s Proposed Dam and Its Implications

The dam, which China claims will be the world’s largest, is planned for the upper reaches of the Brahmaputra river (known as Yarlung Tsangpo in Tibet). This has sparked fears in India regarding potential disruptions to water flow, ecological balance, and the livelihoods of millions dependent on the river downstream.

India has consistently called for China to maintain transparency and cooperation on transboundary water issues. The latest developments have added urgency to bilateral dialogue on this matter, as India seeks to ensure its water security and regional stability.
