The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) finds itself grappling with internal unrest after controversial remarks made by South Delhi leader Ramesh Bidhuri about Delhi Chief Minister Atishi and Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. According to party insiders, discussions are underway to replace Bidhuri with a woman candidate for the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections.
Backlash and Party Reprimand
Bidhuri, a two-time Lok Sabha MP and three-time MLA, recently received the party’s ticket to contest against Atishi in the Kalkaji constituency. However, the backlash over his remarks — particularly his comment comparing the smoothness of Kalkaji roads to Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s cheeks — has led to tensions within the BJP.
“Not just against Atishi, Rameshji’s statement on Priyanka Gandhi Vadra led to his being reprimanded by Naddaji [JP Nadda] within minutes,” a BJP insider told The Indian Express.
Discussions Over Candidate Replacement
In light of the controversy, at least two internal meetings have reportedly been held to consider either shifting or withdrawing Bidhuri’s candidature. According to sources, the party is exploring potential replacements, with several women candidates being discussed as alternatives.
“Talks are still in the preliminary stages,” one source confirmed, noting the need for damage control to counter potential fallout in the upcoming elections.
Strategic Shift in Kalkaji
The decision to field Bidhuri in Kalkaji, a key constituency in South Delhi, was seen as a strategic move to challenge Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Atishi on her home turf. However, the remarks have cast a shadow on his campaign, forcing the BJP to reassess its strategy.
Election Dynamics
The February 5 Assembly elections in Delhi are critical for the BJP, which has been working to expand its influence in the capital dominated by AAP. The controversy surrounding Bidhuri could complicate this effort, particularly as the party seeks to project a more inclusive image.
Bidhuri’s Track Record
Known as a Gujjar strongman, Bidhuri has been a prominent figure in Delhi’s political landscape. However, his controversial remarks and combative style have occasionally drawn criticism, both within and outside the party.
