The District Magistrate (DM) of Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh, Rajender Pensiya, announced on Thursday that posters of individuals involved in the violent clashes on November 24 will be displayed today. The violence erupted over a court-ordered survey of a Mughal-era mosque, and authorities have now identified over 400 suspects linked to the unrest.
As of Thursday, 32 individuals have been arrested in connection with the violence. Pensiya informed news agency PTI that a peace committee meeting would also take place at 3 PM on Thursday to discuss the next steps, including the public display of the posters. “We will discuss with everyone the question of how many people’s posters will be put up,” he said.
The DM further clarified that the posters are still being designed and will be finalized shortly. “400 people have been identified, but those who have already been arrested will be excluded from the posters,” he added.
The violence occurred on November 24 during an Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) examination of a mosque that was ordered by a local court. The court had allowed the survey after a petition claimed the mosque was built on the site of the ancient Harihar temple. The clashes led to the deaths of four people, with several others, including police officers and local residents, suffering injuries.
The ongoing investigations and planned public displays of the suspects highlight the authorities’ efforts to maintain peace and prevent further violence in the region. The situation remains tense, and the local administration is hopeful that the peace committee discussions will help de-escalate the tensions surrounding the controversial survey.
