In a heartwarming ceremony at Matoshri residence on Monday, Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray honored Arif Bamne, the courageous boatmaster who risked his own life to save 35 passengers in the tragic Neelkamal boat accident. Thackeray praised Arif for his quick thinking, bravery, and presence of mind during the crisis, emphasizing his selflessness in the face of danger.
The Neelkamal boat, which was traveling from Gateway of India to Elephanta, collided with a Navy speedboat, causing both vessels to sink. The accident, which resulted in the loss of 15 lives, saw over 100 passengers being successfully rescued. Arif Bamne, who was operating the nearby Purva boat at the time, emerged as a hero. Without hesitation, Arif jumped into the sea, along with his colleagues, and rescued at least 35 passengers, including a three-and-a-half-year-old child who was found unconscious.
In the ceremony, Uddhav Thackeray was joined by prominent Shiv Sena (UBT) leaders, including MP Arvind Sawant, MLAs Milind Narvekar, and Manoj Jamsutkar. Arif, along with his fellow crew members Kifayat Mulla, Tapas Kar, and Nandu Jana, were felicitated for their courageous actions. Each of them was presented with cash rewards as a token of appreciation for their bravery in the face of adversity.
Speaking at the event, Thackeray praised Arif and his team for their heroic actions, describing them as true guardians who risked their lives to ensure the safety of others.
