In a significant political development in Uttar Pradesh, Abbas Ansari, the son of jailed gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari, has been disqualified as a member of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly. The action follows his conviction and two-year sentence in a hate speech case from 2022. Official sources confirmed on Sunday that the Mau Sadar assembly seat, which Abbas represented, has now been declared vacant.
Abbas Ansari, who was elected as an MLA for the first time in 2022 on a Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP) ticket, was sentenced by a special MP-MLA court on Saturday. During an election rally at Paharpur ground on March 3, 2022, Abbas had made inflammatory remarks directed at the local administration. He had allegedly threatened government officials, saying he would "settle scores and teach them a lesson" after the elections. The court found these statements to be in violation of laws governing hate speech and public conduct by candidates.
According to the Representation of the People Act, any elected representative who is sentenced to two years or more in prison faces immediate disqualification. In accordance with this provision, Abbas’s membership in the assembly was terminated. The Mau seat has been declared vacant.
Abbas Ansari’s disqualification is a major setback not only to his personal political career but also to the SBSP. Notably, the SBSP, which contested the 2022 elections in alliance with the Samajwadi Party, is now a part of the BJP-led ruling coalition in Uttar Pradesh. Its president, Om Prakash Rajbhar, currently holds a cabinet position in the Yogi Adityanath-led government.
The disqualification may also have long-term implications for Abbas Ansari’s political future. Under Section 8(3) of the Representation of the People Act, he could be barred from contesting elections for a total of eight years—two years of sentence plus six years of disqualification after completing the term—unless higher courts grant him relief.
