Odisha was gripped by shock and outrage after a 20-year-old student of Fakir Mohan (Autonomous) College in Balasore, who had set herself on fire in protest against alleged inaction on her sexual harassment complaint, succumbed to her injuries late Sunday night.
The student, a second-year undergraduate at the government-run college, had been staging a dharna on campus on Saturday when she suddenly poured kerosene over herself and lit a match. The horrific act was captured on CCTV, with fellow students seen rushing to save her. She was immediately shifted to AIIMS Bhubaneswar with over 90% burns.
Despite aggressive treatment at the Burns ICU, including renal replacement therapy, the hospital confirmed her death at 11:46 PM on July 14. "Despite adequate resuscitation and all possible supportive management, she could not be revived," AIIMS Bhubaneswar said in a statement.
The deceased student had allegedly filed multiple complaints accusing the Head of her Department of sexually harassing her, but according to local sources, no disciplinary action was taken by either the college principal or higher authorities. The silence of the institution now stands at the center of mounting public anger.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi issued a strong statement expressing sorrow and vowing justice. "I am deeply saddened to hear the news of the demise of the female student from FM Autonomous College. Despite the government fulfilling all responsibilities and the tireless efforts of the expert medical team, the victim's life could not be saved," he wrote in an online post.
Assuring the family of full support, the CM added, "I assure the family of the deceased student that all those guilty in this case will face the strictest punishment as per the law. For this, I have personally issued instructions to the authorities. The government stands firmly with the family."
