The Supreme Court has clarified that anyone with a light motor vehicle (LMV) license is allowed to drive transport vehicles under 7,500 kg. This decision, made by a five-judge Constitution bench led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, confirms an earlier 2017 ruling.

The court addressed concerns from insurance companies, which argued that allowing LMV license holders to drive transport vehicles could lead to more accidents. However, the court noted that these companies did not provide any solid evidence showing that LMV drivers are more likely to cause accidents when driving transport vehicles.

With this decision, LMV license holders can legally drive smaller transport vehicles, like certain buses, trucks, and road rollers, as long as the vehicle’s weight is below the 7,500 kg limit.
