Telangana: BRS Leader KT Rama Rao Detained After Demanding Apology From CM Revanth Reddy For Disrespecting Women

The situation underscores growing tensions within Telangana's political landscape, reflecting deep-seated conflicts and the high stakes of intra-party and inter-party relations in the state.

In a dramatic escalation of political tensions in Telangana, several Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) MLAs, including KT Rama Rao, were detained by police following a protest staged in front of the Chief Minister’s chamber in the Assembly. The protest was sparked by controversial remarks made by Chief Minister Revanth Reddy about women legislators, which the BRS deemed disrespectful.

Reports indicate that marshals stationed outside the Chief Minister’s chamber intervened as KT Rama Rao (KTR) and other BRS MLAs staged their protest. The lawmakers were subsequently removed from the Assembly and taken to a nearby police station in a police van.

KTR, who is also the working president of BRS, called for an immediate apology from Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, accusing him of disrespect towards female legislators. The controversy began when Revanth Reddy made a remark suggesting that KTR’s attention to the “elder sisters” behind him would lead to betrayal. He alleged that these female legislators had previously betrayed the Congress by joining the BRS, and warned that such betrayal could lead to the downfall of KTR’s party.

The chief minister’s comments were directed at BRS MLAs Sabitha Indra Reddy and Sunitha Laxma Reddy, who were seated behind KTR during the session. Sabitha Indra Reddy, who had previously invited Revanth to join Congress and promised him a promising future within the party, expressed her hurt and demanded that Revanth retract his statement. She questioned the animosity and repeated targeting directed at her by the chief minister.

In response, Revanth Reddy defended his remarks, stating that while he was once encouraged to join Congress by Sabitha, she had betrayed him by joining the BRS despite her promises to support his election bid in Malkajgiri in 2018.

The incident led to an uproar in the Assembly, with BRS legislators storming the Well of the House, accusing Chief Minister Revanth Reddy of insulting their female colleagues. They demanded justice and criticized what they termed as “dictatorship” by the Chief Minister.
