In a horrifying act of violence that has sent shockwaves across the nation, a terrorist attack in the scenic town of Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, left one tourist dead and several others injured on Monday. The incident occurred in broad daylight, shattering the calm of one of the Valley's most beloved tourist destinations.
According to initial reports, 2-3 terrorists, allegedly disguised in army uniforms, opened indiscriminate fire on a group of tourists enjoying horse rides along a popular trail. The chaos that followed led to panic in the area as terrified locals and tourists scrambled for safety.
Security forces swiftly cordoned off the area and launched a large-scale search operation to track down the assailants. Officials say all exit routes are being monitored and drone surveillance has been activated.
While exact casualty figures are still being confirmed, officials have stated that the nature of the attack suggests a planned assault aimed at instilling fear during the peak of the tourist season.
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah took to social media, expressing profound grief and outrage.
“I’m shocked beyond belief. This attack on our visitors is an abomination. The perpetrators of this attack are animals, inhuman, and worthy of contempt. No words of condemnation are enough,” he wrote.
He also confirmed that senior government official Sakina Itoo has visited the hospital where the injured are being treated and added, “I will be returning to Srinagar immediately to monitor the situation firsthand.”
In a follow-up post, Abdullah reiterated the scale of the attack, calling it “much larger than anything we’ve seen directed at civilians in recent years.”
Former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti also condemned the incident in strong words, describing it as a “cowardly attack” that targeted innocent lives.
