The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has reiterated India’s firm stance on illegal immigration, urging Bangladesh to expedite the verification process of more than 2,360 individuals residing illegally in the country.

Speaking to reporters, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal emphasized that India is committed to handling all illegal foreign residents strictly under legal provisions.

"People who are staying in India illegally or foreigners who are staying in India illegally, whether they happen to be Bangladeshi nationals or any other national, they will be dealt with as per law," Jaiswal said.

He pointed out that a significant number of Bangladeshi nationals are awaiting deportation, but the process has been delayed due to the lack of nationality verification by the Bangladeshi authorities.

“We have a large number of Bangladeshi nationals here who are required to be deported. We have asked the Bangladeshi side to verify their nationality. We have a pending list of over 2,360 cases of people who are required to be deported,” he noted.

India has urged Bangladesh to cooperate swiftly on the matter.

“We urge the Bangladeshi side to expedite the verification process,” the MEA spokesperson added.

The deportation issue has gained renewed attention amid growing concerns over internal security and demographic changes in several Indian states with porous international borders. India maintains that any foreign national found staying illegally will be subject to action under applicable immigration laws.
