Several Trinamool Congress (TMC) MPs were detained by Delhi Police on Friday while staging a protest outside the office of Union Home Minister Amit Shah in the national capital. The MPs were protesting against recent Enforcement Directorate (ED) and CBI actions, which they alleged were aimed at targeting the opposition ahead of elections.
Those detained included TMC MPs Derek O’Brien, Mahua Moitra, Kirti Azad and Satabdi Roy. As the MPs raised slogans and attempted to hold a sit-in near the Home Minister’s office, police personnel removed them from the area and took them into custody.
Reacting to the detention, Mahua Moitra said the way elected representatives were being treated was visible to the entire country. She said the TMC would continue its fight and asserted that such actions would not help the BJP politically.
Derek O’Brien said the detention showed how opposition MPs were being stopped from peacefully expressing dissent. Kirti Azad accused the BJP of misusing central agencies, claiming that raids were being carried out in an unfair manner to influence elections. Satabdi Roy also echoed similar views, saying central agencies were activated whenever elections approached, but added that such tactics would not bring electoral success.
The Trinamool Congress also issued a strong statement accusing the Centre of using Delhi Police to silence democratic protest. The party alleged that after the misuse of agencies like the ED, the detention of MPs was another attempt to suppress opposition voices.
The protest in Delhi is part of a larger agitation by the TMC. Party leaders and MPs are also holding demonstrations in West Bengal against ED raids linked to I-PAC chief Pratik Jain. Senior leaders including Derek O’Brien, Mahua Moitra, Saket Gokhale, Pratima Mondal, Kirti Azad and Dr Sharmila Sarkar have been leading these protests.
