Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his visit to West Bengal on Friday, unveiled a slew of development projects worth ₹5,400 crore aimed at transforming the state's infrastructure. The projects span crucial sectors including oil and gas, power, railways, and roads, with a strong focus on improving connectivity and boosting clean energy initiatives.
Speaking at a large public rally in Durgapur following the inauguration, PM Modi launched a direct offensive against the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC government, alleging that it was the biggest obstacle in the path of West Bengal’s progress. “The TMC government has become a barrier between West Bengal and development,” he said, calling out the administration for its failure to generate jobs and attract investment.
Recalling the state’s historic industrial legacy, the Prime Minister said, “There was a time when West Bengal stood as the hub of India’s progress—a thriving centre for businesses, drawing talent from across the country. Cities like Durgapur, Bardhaman, and Asansol were pivotal in driving the nation’s industrial growth.” However, he lamented the current state of affairs, stating, “Today, Bengal’s youth are forced to migrate for opportunities. Instead of new industries flourishing, existing ones are shutting down.”
The Prime Minister emphasized that the newly launched projects were a symbol of the transformation people are hoping for. “Bengal desires change. Bengal demands development,” he said, asserting that a BJP government could reverse the trend. “Once the BJP government assumes office, Bengal can reclaim its status among India’s top industrial states within a few years. This is my firm conviction.”
Addressing the concerns of the youth, PM Modi assured them that the current crisis could be overcome. “With a new government, the state can emerge as a leading industrial powerhouse,” he said confidently.
He also hit out at the ruling party for allegedly enabling corruption and driving away investment. “The state’s resources are controlled by the mafia, while government policies are deliberately crafted to facilitate rampant corruption among ministers,” he alleged. PM Modi also accused the TMC of imposing a “Gunda Tax” that discourages entrepreneurs from investing in Bengal.
