In a significant move aimed at bolstering farmer welfare, the Union Cabinet has approved an increase in the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for paddy by ₹117, raising it to ₹2,300 per quintal for the 2024-25 kharif crop season. Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the decision on Wednesday.
Speaking at a press briefing, Minister Vaishnaw highlighted the importance of this decision within the broader context of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s third term. “The third term of PM Modi is very important as it focuses on continuity with change through many decisions for farmers’ welfare,” Vaishnaw stated, underscoring the government’s commitment to agricultural reform and farmer support.
The hike in MSP is seen as a strategic measure to ensure that farmers receive a fair price for their produce, thereby enhancing their income stability and encouraging increased production. This move is expected to particularly benefit small and marginal farmers, who form a significant portion of the farming community in India.
The decision to increase the MSP comes amidst growing demands from various farmer groups for better pricing policies and more robust support mechanisms from the government. The hike is part of a series of initiatives aimed at addressing the economic challenges faced by farmers and boosting the agricultural sector’s overall growth.
