Early Life and Education
Ramdas Bandu Athawale was born on December 25, 1959, in Agalgaon, Sangli district, Maharashtra. Coming from a humble background, he was the son of Bandu Bapu Athawale and Honsabai Bandu Athawale. He pursued his early education at Siddharth College, Mumbai, although he did not complete his undergraduate studies. Before venturing into politics, Athawale was actively involved in Marathi theater and even played a lead role in a Marathi film titled “Anyayacha Pratikar,” reflecting his early interest in cultural activities.
Political Career
Athawale’s political journey began with his involvement in the Dalit Panther movement, a significant movement aimed at uplifting Dalits in Maharashtra. In 1990, he was elected as a Member of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly and served until 1996. In 2014, he was elected to the Rajya Sabha, representing Maharashtra, and in 2016, he was appointed as the Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government, a position he continues to hold.
