Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday briefed the media on the ongoing crackdown against the illegal sale and smuggling of poisonous cough syrups in the state, calling it a serious threat to public health and law and order. He said the action was initiated after multiple complaints surfaced about dangerous cough syrups being openly sold at different locations across Uttar Pradesh.
According to the Chief Minister, investigations revealed that these syrups were not only harmful but were also being smuggled illegally, prompting authorities to invoke strict provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Yogi Adityanath said the state government treated the issue as a high-priority case due to its direct impact on youth safety and public health.
He stated that coordinated action was launched involving the Uttar Pradesh Government, the Food Safety and Drug Administration (FSDA), the UP Police, and the Special Task Force (STF). As part of the operation, large-scale raids were conducted, illegal supply chains were dismantled, and several people involved in manufacturing, distribution, and smuggling were arrested.
The Chief Minister claimed that the enforcement drive has significantly curbed the illegal circulation of such syrups in the state. He added that during the course of the investigation, authorities found alleged links between some of the arrested individuals and the Samajwadi Party, a revelation that has added a political dimension to the case.
