UP Winter Session Likely From December 15; Opposition Gears Up For Fierce Showdown Ahead Of Panchayat Polls

The winter session of the Uttar Pradesh Legislature is expected to commence around December 15, with senior officials finalising the schedule and preparations for what is shaping up to be a politically charged assembly sitting. Though the session is likely to remain brief—spanning only four to five days—it will carry significant weight as it precedes the upcoming panchayat elections, a crucial test for both the government and the opposition.

Opposition parties, led by the Samajwadi Party and the Congress, have already signalled a combative approach. They are preparing to corner the government on a range of issues, including the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, rising unemployment, persistent inflation, law-and-order lapses, farmer distress, and concerns over women’s safety. Party strategists say the winter session offers an important opportunity to highlight what they describe as the government's “failures” ahead of the rural polls.

Last year, the winter session began on December 16 and lasted four days; officials suggest a similar duration this time. The government, meanwhile, is expected to use the platform to highlight its achievements and progress on welfare initiatives such as rural housing, road connectivity, clean drinking water projects, and improvements in social sector schemes. Several recent ordinances are also likely to be presented for approval and conversion into formal legislation.

With local body elections approaching, the Yogi Adityanath government may table a supplementary budget, primarily to fast-track rural development and infrastructure projects.

As per House tradition, the opening day will begin with obituary references. The Legislature is likely to adjourn after paying tribute to Ghosi MLA Sudhakar Singh, who passed away on November 20.
