US Urges Calm As Tensions Flare Between India And Pakistan After Deadly Pahalgam Attack

In the wake of the devastating terrorist attack in Pahalgam that claimed 26 lives, mostly tourists, the United States has called for calm and cooperation between India and Pakistan while reiterating its unwavering support for New Delhi in the fight against terrorism.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Wednesday held separate phone conversations with India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, focusing on the regional implications of the April 22 attack and the need for collaborative efforts to maintain peace in South Asia.

In his conversation with Jaishankar, Rubio conveyed his condolences over the “horrific” loss of life in Pahalgam and pledged continued US support in counter-terrorism cooperation. “He reaffirmed the United States' commitment to cooperation with India against terrorism. He also encouraged India to work with Pakistan to de-escalate tensions and maintain peace and security in South Asia,” said State Department Spokesperson Tammy Bruce in a statement.

The call to Sharif carried a similarly stern message. Rubio emphasized the urgent need for Pakistan to denounce the violence and support a thorough investigation. “He urged Pakistani officials’ cooperation in investigating this unconscionable attack,” Bruce said.

Both leaders reportedly agreed on the need to avoid further escalation and work toward re-establishing direct communication lines. “Rubio and Sharif reaffirmed their continued commitment to holding terrorists accountable for their heinous acts of violence,” the State Department confirmed.

The Pahalgam incident has reignited regional tensions and global concern over the fragile peace between the nuclear-armed neighbors. While India has remained firm on cross-border terrorism concerns, the US has positioned itself as a mediator calling for accountability, restraint, and dialogue.
