The monsoon mayhem in Uttarakhand continues, with fresh cloudbursts reported in Chamoli and Rudraprayag districts, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said on Friday.
Taking to ‘X’ (formerly Twitter), Dhami confirmed that some families are feared trapped under debris and that a massive rescue operation is underway. “A distressing report has been received that due to cloudbursts in the Bareth Dungar Tok area under the Buskedar tehsil of Rudraprayag district and in the Deval area of Chamoli district, some families have been trapped due to debris flow. Relief and rescue operations are underway on a war footing by the local administration,” the CM wrote in Hindi.
He added that he is in constant touch with district authorities and has directed the disaster secretary and magistrates to ensure swift and effective rescue efforts. “I pray to Baba Kedar for the safe well-being of all,” Dhami said.
Chamoli District Magistrate Sandeep Tiwari confirmed that two people are missing and several animals have been buried after the cloudburst in Dewal. He noted that road blockages caused by heavy rains initially delayed relief work, but rescue teams have now reached the affected area.
Meanwhile, Rudraprayag Police issued a cautionary advisory, stating: “Due to continuous rainfall, the water levels of the Alaknanda and Mandakini rivers have risen significantly. The Rudraprayag Police and administrative teams are advising the general public to stay away from the riverbanks and relocate to safe areas.”
Like much of North India, Uttarakhand has been severely battered by torrential rains this monsoon. The state has already reported multiple flash floods and cloudbursts across Dharali, Uttarkashi, Tharali, and Pauri, leading to the loss of several lives.
Earlier this week, Dhami visited flood-hit areas in Uttarkashi and announced a relief package for affected families.
