Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, left New Delhi early Monday morning for an overseas visit, beginning with London before heading to Germany later this week, sources said. His travel has once again triggered a political confrontation, with the Bharatiya Janata Party questioning his absence during the ongoing Winter Session of Parliament.
According to party officials, Gandhi is scheduled to be in Germany from December 15 to 20, where he will engage with lawmakers and members of the Indian diaspora. A key interaction is planned in Berlin on December 17, during which he is expected to discuss issues related to democracy, institutions and India’s global engagement.
The BJP launched a sharp attack over the timing of the visit, pointing out that Parliament remains in session until December 19. Party spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla mocked Gandhi’s foreign travel, branding him with sarcastic labels and alleging a pattern of overseas trips during crucial political moments.
The remarks drew a swift response from Congress leaders. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra defended her brother, questioning why the ruling party was objecting to Opposition travel while remaining silent on the Prime Minister’s frequent foreign visits. She argued that international engagement cannot be selectively criticised based on political convenience.
The Indian Overseas Congress confirmed Rahul Gandhi’s Germany schedule, stating that the meetings aim to strengthen dialogue with global lawmakers and the Indian community abroad. Congress leaders also noted that during his international engagements, Gandhi has consistently raised concerns about democratic backsliding and institutional independence in India.
