An online post falsely claiming that 110 Muslim MPs have been elected to the Lok Sabha after the recent elections has gone viral, misleading many. The post alleges that 110 Muslim MPs, accounting for 20% of the total strength, have been elected in the latest Lok Sabha elections. However, a thorough keyword search for ?Muslim MPs Lok Sabha? and multiple credible news reports reveal that this claim is baseless.
According to various reports, only 24 Muslims were elected to the Lok Sabha this year, two fewer than in 2019. A total of 78 Muslims, including independents, contested this election, compared to 115 Muslim candidates in 2019. No credible source or report supports the claim of 110 Muslim MPs elected across India during the 2024 general elections.
An Indian Express report dated June 8, 2024, highlights that Muslims now account for only 4.42% of the Lok Sabha's total strength, the second lowest share of all time. This is a significant drop from the record 49 Muslim MPs (9.04% of the House) elected in 1980 and 45 Muslim MPs (8.3% of the House) in 1984. The number of Muslim MPs in the Lok Sabha has never exceeded 40 since then.
A similar report from ABP News supports this data, stating that there are only 24 Muslim MPs in the current Lok Sabha. Additionally, a Mint report dated June 7, 2024, clarifies that while there are no Muslim MPs among NDA parties, the INDIA bloc has 7.9% Muslim MPs. The report also notes that the NDA has no Christian MPs, whereas the INDIA bloc has 3.5% Christian MPs and 5% Sikh MPs.
These reports collectively debunk the viral claim, confirming that the actual number of Muslim MPs elected to the Lok Sabha in 2024 is far lower than the falsely claimed 110.
