The seventh day of Parliament’s winter session witnessed a stormy debate in the Lok Sabha as Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi launched a blistering attack on the BJP-led government during a discussion on the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Gandhi, speaking with unusual sharpness, accused the government of orchestrating systematic tampering of voter lists and endangering the foundations of Indian democracy.

Opening his remarks with a direct charge, Gandhi declared, “Vote chori is the biggest anti-national act. When you attack the vote, you attack the soul of India.” He said that any attempt to distort electoral rolls was not merely political wrongdoing but an assault on the nation’s democratic identity.

Reiterating concerns previously raised in Parliament and public rallies, Gandhi alleged large-scale anomalies in the Haryana voter lists. He cited the instance of a “Brazilian woman” whose name, he claimed, appeared 22 times across multiple polling stations. Several Opposition MPs even carried enlarged photographs of the woman as a symbolic protest, alleging deep-rooted manipulation in the electoral revision process.

According to Gandhi, the Election Commission of India (ECI) had failed to provide convincing answers regarding the alleged discrepancies. He accused the poll body of stonewalling queries and neglecting its constitutional responsibility to protect the integrity of elections. “The institution meant to protect democracy is now refusing to answer simple questions,” he said.

The Congress leader also used the occasion to mount an ideological attack on the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). In a pointed critique, he stated, “What troubles the RSS is the idea that every Indian—regardless of religion, language, or caste—is equal. They believe in a hierarchy and that they should sit at the top.” Gandhi asserted that the ruling establishment’s worldview was incompatible with the inclusive and pluralistic vision on which India was built.

As Gandhi spoke, BJP lawmakers frequently interjected, leading to several heated exchanges across the aisle. The debate highlighted the deepening tension between the Opposition and the government over electoral credibility ahead of several crucial elections in 2025.
