Congress Leader Rahul Gandhi has called national attention to the dire situation faced by Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) employees, including Home Guards, who are enduring severe job insecurity and economic hardships. On Monday, Gandhi took to X (formerly Twitter) to voice his concerns about the challenges faced by these essential workers.
Rahul Gandhi highlighted the stark issues plaguing DTC employees, stating, “No social security, no stable income, and no permanent job – contractual labour has reduced a job of great responsibility to a state of compulsion.” His comments reflect growing frustration among workers who feel that their significant contributions are not being adequately recognized or rewarded.
Gandhi’s remarks follow his recent bus ride experience, where he directly interacted with bus drivers, conductors, and marshals. During this ride, he witnessed firsthand their struggles and the pervasive uncertainty affecting their lives. He noted that Home Guards, tasked with ensuring passenger safety, have not received their salaries for the past six months, exacerbating their financial difficulties.
The Congress leader criticized the government, accusing it of neglecting the welfare of DTC workers and threatening their job security through potential privatization. He stated, “These are the people who run India, who facilitate the travel of millions of commuters every day – but all they have got in return for their dedication is injustice. The demands are clear – equal work, equal pay, complete justice.”
Gandhi’s call for action is supported by Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi, who echoed his concerns on social media. Priyanka Gandhi emphasized the dedication of DTC workers, lamenting that despite their hard work, they are struggling to make ends meet due to economic difficulties. She praised Rahul Gandhi’s efforts to listen to and advocate for these workers, stating, “It is important to listen to their Mann Ki Baat. Rahul Gandhi is constantly listening to them and raising his voice for their justice.”
The situation of the DTC employees has drawn significant attention, and Gandhi’s campaign for equal pay and justice aims to address the systemic issues that have left many workers in a state of distress.
