'What Happened Now, Mr. Shah?' Congress Revives Ceasefire Remarks Amid India-Pakistan Truce

As India and Pakistan agreed to halt all firing and military operations across land, sea, and air, the political debate at home intensified—with Union Home Minister Amit Shah facing sharp criticism from the Congress party over his previous statements on the issue of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).

Congress leader Supriya Sule on Monday reignited the controversy by sharing an old clip from Amit Shah’s speech in the Lok Sabha dated December 6, 2023, where he had strongly criticized former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. “When our army was winning, a ceasefire was declared; otherwise, PoK would have been part of India today,” Shah had said. Sule responded on social media, asking, “So tell me, what happened now?”—clearly referring to the current ceasefire understanding between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.

In that speech, Amit Shah had stated: “Two mistakes were made due to the decisions of (former PM) Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, which caused Kashmir to suffer for many years. The first was declaring a ceasefire—when our army was winning, the ceasefire was imposed. Had it been delayed by three days, PoK would have been a part of India today. The second mistake was taking our internal issue to the UN.”

Multiple Congress leaders have since amplified the video clip, questioning the government’s consistency in dealing with Pakistan and accusing the BJP of politicizing national security when convenient.

The ceasefire announcement comes in the backdrop of Operation Sindoor, India’s calculated military response to the brutal April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam that claimed 26 civilian lives. The operation, launched on May 7, reportedly targeted terror infrastructure across the LoC and in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

Meanwhile, all eyes are now on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is scheduled to address the nation at 8 PM today.
