In a momentous ceremony, Acharya Devvrat, the seasoned political figure and ex-educator, was sworn in as the Governor of Maharashtra, taking on the responsibility in addition to his current role as Governor of Gujarat. The oath of office and secrecy was administered in Sanskrit by Justice Chandrashekhar of the Bombay High Court, in a ceremony attended by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.
Acharya Devvrat, along with his wife Darshana Devi, arrived in Mumbai from Ahmedabad on the morning of September 14 to assume his additional charge following the election of CP Radhakrishnan as Vice President, who resigned from the additional responsibility of Maharashtra Governor. The appointment was officially communicated by President Draupadi Murmu, with her Press Secretary Ajay Kumar Singh issuing the order on September 11. The directive highlighted that Devvrat would perform the functions of Maharashtra Governor in addition to his duties in Gujarat.
A veteran administrator, Acharya Devvrat has served as the Governor of Gujarat since July 2019, and before that, as the Governor of Himachal Pradesh from August 2015 to July 2019. Known for his discipline, administrative acumen, and ethical leadership, Devvrat’s experience makes him well-suited to oversee the governance of two major states simultaneously.
Originally from Rohtak, Haryana, Devvrat is deeply influenced by the teachings of Arya Samaj and Swami Dayanand. Before entering constitutional roles, he served as the principal of a Gurukul in Kurukshetra, reflecting a long-standing commitment to education and social values. His involvement in natural farming initiatives led to the establishment of India’s first Natural Agriculture University in Halol, Gujarat, a project he personally oversees.
At 66, Acharya Devvrat is recognized for his sattvic lifestyle, ethical leadership, and focus on education and agriculture reform. Political observers note that his additional responsibility in Maharashtra comes at a crucial time, emphasizing the need for experienced and principled governance.
With Devvrat at the helm, Maharashtra now has a Governor who combines administrative experience, moral integrity, and a vision for sustainable development, while continuing to manage Gujarat’s affairs.
