Who Is Lakshman Singh: The Top Congress Leader Criticising Rahul Gandhi’s Hindu Remark?

Discover who Lakshman Singh is, the Congress leader who openly criticized Rahul Gandhi's controversial remarks on Hindus, sparking internal debate within the party

Lakshman Singh, a prominent Congress leader and brother of Digvijaya Singh, has publicly criticized Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, for what he termed as ‘indecent’ remarks about Hindus during a recent parliamentary session. Singh, known for his candid views within the party, expressed his disapproval in a social media post, asserting that discussions in Parliament should focus solely on issues concerning the welfare of the nation and its people.

In his post, Singh stated, “The comments made on ‘Hindus’ in the Parliament are indecent and unnecessary. It would be appropriate to raise only and only issues related to the people and the country.”

Gandhi’s remarks, delivered in his inaugural speech as Leader of Opposition, sparked controversy when he accused leaders of the ruling party of not being true Hindus, alleging their involvement in ‘violence and hate’ continuously. These comments drew strong reactions from members of the ruling coalition, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemning Gandhi’s statement as an affront to the Hindu community.

Lakshman Singh, who has a long history of active participation in Madhya Pradesh politics, emphasized the need for respectful discourse and constructive debate in parliamentary proceedings. His criticism of Gandhi’s statement underscores internal dissent within the Congress party on matters of rhetoric and strategy.

Born and raised in Raghogarh, Lakshman Singh entered politics in 1987 and has served five terms as a Member of Parliament (MP) and three terms as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA). His political career has seen affiliations with both the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), reflecting his independent stance on various issues over the years.

Singh’s temporary departure from the BJP in 2010, following his outspoken remarks against party leadership, and subsequent return to Congress in 2013, highlight his reputation as a vocal and principled politician. His recent criticism of Gandhi’s remarks adds to the ongoing dialogue within the Congress party over its messaging and approach in national discourse.
