Ahead of the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor and former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging the Central Government to allocate subsidised land for constructing houses for sanitation workers and other government employees in Delhi.
Addressing a press conference on Sunday, January 19, Kejriwal highlighted the plight of sanitation staff living in slums and government-provided accommodations, which they must vacate after retirement. He proposed a collaborative housing scheme, with the Centre providing land and the Delhi Government undertaking construction.
Proposal for Sanitation Workers
"I have written to the Prime Minister to initiate a scheme for government employees, starting with sanitation workers. Land in Delhi comes under the Centre, so if it is provided at a subsidised rate, the Delhi Government can build houses for them. These homes will significantly improve their living conditions," Kejriwal stated.
The AAP leader suggested launching the scheme for workers under the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) and Nagar Nigam. The cost of the houses would be deducted in installments from the salaries of the sanitation staff, ensuring affordability.
Key Points from Kejriwal’s Letter to PM Modi
In his letter, Kejriwal emphasized:
- The Role of Sanitation Workers: "They are the backbone of the city's sanitation system," he wrote, highlighting the vulnerability of these workers who lack permanent housing post-retirement.
- Request for Subsidised Land: The Delhi Government proposed constructing houses on centrally provided land, with workers repaying the cost in easy installments.
- Long-Term Benefits: "This scheme can later be extended to other government employees," Kejriwal added, positioning it as a welfare initiative for the city's workforce.
Call for Collaborative Efforts
"I hope the Centre and the Prime Minister agree to this proposal, as it aims to uplift the poor and improve their living standards," Kejriwal said.
This appeal aligns with AAP's broader narrative of providing affordable housing and improving the quality of life for Delhi's underprivileged populations, particularly those who play critical roles in maintaining the city’s infrastructure.
