On the eve of the 2024 Lok Sabha and Assembly election results, Congress has been dealt a significant blow in the northeastern states of Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim, where the party failed to secure any seats.
In Arunachal Pradesh, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has staged a strong comeback, securing a majority with a notable win. As of the latest reports, BJP had won 25 seats in the 60-member assembly and was leading in 21 additional seats, pushing their tally to 46. The National People's Party (NPEP) clinched 1 seat and was leading in 4 more. The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) was ahead in 3 seats, the People's Party of Arunachal (PPA) in 2, and an Independent candidate was leading in 1 seat. Congress, which had two members in the outgoing assembly, failed to win a single seat this time.
Comparatively, the 2019 Assembly elections saw BJP with 42 seats, JD(U) with 7, NPEP with 5, Congress with 4, PPA with 1, and Independents with 2 seats.
In Sikkim, the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) achieved a landslide victory, securing 31 out of 32 assembly seats. The Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) was leading in the remaining seat. Former footballer Bhaichung Bhutia once again failed to secure a seat in his sixth political contest over the past decade. In the outgoing assembly, SKM held 17 seats while SDF had 15.
Despite the setbacks, it's worth noting that in the 2019 assembly elections, neither BJP nor Congress had seats in Sikkim, providing a slight consolation for the national parties.
