Ayush Doctor Nusrat Parveen Joins Duty In Bihar Weeks After Veil Row With CM Nitish Kumar

Dr. Nusrat Parveen, an Ayush doctor whose interaction with Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar sparked a major controversy last month, has finally joined government service after a delay of over three weeks. She completed her joining formalities on Wednesday, the final day of the extended deadline given by the state government.

Instead of reporting to the designated primary health centre, Dr. Parveen chose to complete the process directly at the health department office. Officials confirmed that her appointment was formally accepted on the last permissible date, bringing an end to speculation over her future in government service.

Initially, Dr. Parveen was instructed to report for duty on December 20, but she did not do so. The government later extended the deadline twice, first till December 31 and then till January 7, citing the exceptional circumstances surrounding her case. Authorities had earlier indicated that failure to join within the extended period could lead to cancellation of her appointment.

Dr. Parveen was posted at Sabalpur Primary Health Centre in the Patna Sadar area. However, local medical officials clarified that she did not join at the health centre and instead opted to report directly to the department to complete official procedures.

The delay followed a controversial incident on December 15 during an appointment letter distribution programme in Patna. At the event, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar publicly questioned Dr. Parveen’s naqab and removed it while handing over her appointment letter. A video of the moment circulated widely on social media, triggering sharp political reactions and a national debate on personal liberty, religious expression, and dignity in public office.

Several political leaders and civil rights groups criticised the Chief Minister’s actions, calling them inappropriate and insensitive. The incident also put Dr. Parveen under intense public scrutiny, contributing to uncertainty over whether she would take up the government post or continue her medical studies.

Dr. Parveen is a second-year student at the Government Tibbi College and Hospital. College authorities had earlier confirmed that she was given special consideration due to the circumstances and had the option to either join service or pursue higher education.
