In a landmark political transition in Bihar, Samrat Choudhary is set to be sworn in as the state’s new Chief Minister on April 15 at 11 am, marking the first time the Bharatiya Janata Party will directly lead the government in the state.
The development follows the resignation of veteran leader Nitish Kumar, who stepped down after a long tenure, bringing an end to his dominant role in Bihar politics. His exit has cleared the path for a new leadership structure under the BJP-led alliance.
Choudhary’s elevation was finalised after he was unanimously chosen as the BJP legislature party leader. His name was proposed by Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Sinha and received backing from several senior party leaders, reflecting strong internal consensus. The decision was formally announced in the presence of central observer Shivraj Singh Chouhan during a key NDA meeting.
Soon after, Choudhary was also elected leader of the NDA legislative party, consolidating his position as the alliance’s face for governance in Bihar. The 57-year-old leader has been a key figure in the state’s political landscape and played a significant role in strengthening the BJP’s base in recent years.
Earlier in the day, Nitish Kumar met Governor Syed Ata Hasnain at Lok Bhavan in Patna and formally submitted his resignation. Speaking about his decision, Kumar said, “I have done a lot of work for the people of Bihar. Recently, I decided to leave the post of chief minister… and therefore, after today's cabinet meeting, I met the governor and submitted my resignation.”
His departure marks the end of an era, as he was the longest-serving Chief Minister of Bihar and a central figure in shaping the state’s governance over the past two decades.
With Choudhary now set to take charge, Bihar is entering a new political phase under BJP leadership, a shift that could redefine the state’s power dynamics and future policy direction.
