The political clash between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) over the Rohingya immigration issue is intensifying as Delhi gears up for the upcoming assembly elections. The dispute has gained momentum after Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri accused Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal of losing his "mental equilibrium," a statement which has sparked a strong rebuttal from Kejriwal.
Kejriwal, while addressing the controversy, called for the arrest of Hardeep Singh Puri, claiming that the Union Minister holds critical information about the settlement of Rohingyas in Delhi. In a direct challenge to the BJP leader, Kejriwal said, "I request them to arrest Hardeep Singh Puri. He has all the data on where he settled Rohingyas and how. He tweeted and gave the information. Hardeep Singh Puri and Amit Shah have all the data on how and where they have settled Rohingyas."
Puri, who served as the Housing Minister in the Modi government's second term, has been accused by AAP of facilitating the settlement of Rohingyas in Delhi for electoral gains. The allegations have sparked a war of words, with both parties accusing each other of orchestrating the influx of Rohingyas into the capital.
In a statement to ANI, Puri hit back at Kejriwal, suggesting that the Delhi CM's recent behavior reflects a disturbed mental state. Puri remarked, "I think when Arvind Kejriwal was in 'state hospitality' (in jail), his 'mental equilibrium' got disturbed? What is the vision of Arvind Kejriwal - disruption?? Arvind Kejriwal is left with very little time (as government in Delhi)."
Puri went on to accuse Kejriwal and the AAP government of helping the Rohingyas settle in Delhi in exchange for votes. He added, "This is the (Arvind) Kejriwal and AAP, who were saying that we (BJP) have brought Rohingyas. Do you think that they (Rohingyas) will in any circumstance vote for the BJP? They (AAP) have helped them settle here for the votes."
In response to accusations of voter manipulation, Kejriwal also alleged that the BJP has been running a covert operation?dubbed "Operation Lotus"?in his constituency, New Delhi, since mid-December. Kejriwal claimed that the BJP has been attempting to delete and add names to the voter list, thereby manipulating the democratic process. He said, "In my New Delhi assembly constituency - their (BJP) 'operation Lotus' has been going on since December 15. In these 15 days, they have applied for the deletion of 5,000 votes and the addition of 7,500 votes."
Kejriwal raised concerns about the fairness of the election, stating that the attempt to manipulate the voter list undermines the very essence of democracy, questioning the legitimacy of the electoral process.
Despite the ongoing accusations, Puri remains confident that the BJP will emerge victorious in the 2025 Delhi assembly elections. As the political tension escalates, both parties continue to target each other over the contentious issue of Rohingya immigration, making it a central theme in the lead-up to the polls.
